While the weather has been less than ideal, we have been able to accomplish some field work. We currently have about 40% of our beans planted and a little more than 20% of our corn in the ground. Around 70% of our pre-plant corn herbicide and nitrogen fertilizer is applied. The beans we planted on the Saturday before Easter are just starting to emerge. The moisture we have along with the forecasted temperatures should get them up quickly now.
We started planting corn on Sunday the 1st of May. Near the end of the day, we had a break down with the planter but had repairs made and were back going by mid-day Monday. Monday night the rain finally reached us and over night totaled just over 0.5”. We were lucky to miss the rain over the weekend as the storm split and went around DeWitt County. With more rain in the forecast, it looks like we will be out of the fields for a week or so. We are thankful to have as much done as we do. One does not need to travel all that far north or south of here to see where wetter conditions have kept growers from doing any field work yet this spring.
